Walking tours keen to breathe the atmosphere of Dickensian London pause outside this venerable institution, tucked into a warren of historic lanes south of Cornhill & with enough literary associations & olde worlde trappings to charm the most demanding of foreign clients. The food is as traditional as the surroundings it’s served in: soup of the day to start, with calf’s liver or steak & kidney pie, Barnsley chop or Scottish sirloin to follow, bubble & squeak on the side & Welsh rarebit or a hot pud to finish. It’s no longer a pub, so to enjoy its creaky authenticity you’ll need to bag a table for lunch.
