They don’t make them like they used to – Indian restaurants, that is – which makes The Gaylord on the Isle of Dogs something of an anachronism. Now well into its third decade, this petite Island Gardens evergreen oozes charm. The fanned napkins, fish tanks, chandeliers & sprays of carnations may border on the kitsch, but their presence is a comfort in what’s otherwise a rather gloomy shopping parade. All the curry house classics are here (vindaloo, Madras, korma et al), although it’s worth branching out & exploring more interesting regional specials such as Bangladeshi shatkora lime chicken & mach bortha (mackerel with herbs). A Cobra beer is probably your best bet for liquid refreshment, although there are some cheap, spice-friendly wines from £10.95.
