Never the lightest or brightest of dining rooms, a revamp has plunged this urbane Argentinian in the former gold vault of the Bank of England into the darkness of a near-black colour scheme. Still, the gloom here is sexy, not stygian & there’s nothing gloomy about the feedback from its many fans, who praise food, wine & service alike. This is a carnivore’s paradise & the excellent Argentinian steaks are undoubtedly the focus, with rump, sirloin, fillet & rib-eye available separately in three sizes or together as a monster 600g Gaucho sampler. There are options for those who don’t want steak, including ceviches, main course fish dishes & even a brace of veggie options. The Argentinian wine list is listed by region & there’s a fine & rare selection for high rollers: a Weinert Estrella Malbec 1977 for £175, for instance.
