Square Meal Review of Gaucho Chancery Lane ?

Steak fans find themselves inexorably drawn to Gaucho, where perfectly prepared slabs of prime, pampas-fed Argentinian beef are the main attraction. Browse the different cuts before choosing your favourite, perhaps with a side of perfectly crisp chips & peppercorn sauce, washed down with a Malbec from the first-rate wine list. Elsewhere, the menu offers plenty of choice from zesty ceviche or shrimp causita starters, to empanadas, grilled pork matambre & dulce de leche tart. Though the food is rarely at fault, there have been grumbles about ‘tedious’ & ‘disappointing’ service, while high prices are a recurring gripe – even among the loyal following of Chancery Lane legal eagles. At least the striking black-&-white cowhide interior, with its dim lights, mirrors & sleek balcony bar provides a suitably sophisticated setting for some wallet-flexing.

All the food on the menu here (not just the steak) is just great – can't fault it. The wine list is also fantastic.

However, it's very expensive for what it is, and when I last visited (2 weeks ago) the service was unattentive and terminally slow. Perhaps, in this climate, they need to start being a little less complacent.

A buzzing atmosphere of people having good food, good wine and great conversations. A decor of black and white cow hide and low lighting. The service was excellent, our waitress could not have been more helpful. The food was wonderful. On a table of 7 we had a nice range of starters, myself with crab cakes which were delicious and perfectly cooked. The mango and onion salad that accompanied it was light and refreshing.

My main course comprised of the most beautifully cooked steak I have ever eaten in my life. I went for a 200g medium fillet, I could cut through it like butter and I only needed to chew it about three times before I needed to swallow.

I am already looking to rebook in January for a birthday celebration.
