French House Restaurant

Weave through the crowds outside the perennially popular French House pub & up the stairs to the tiny restaurant. With dark red walls, a small bar & about 25 seats, it’s a cosy place to dine, saved from feeling too cramped by a huge mirror along one side & a row of Georgian windows along the other. Despite its name, this isn’t necessarily the place for coq au vin & boeuf bourguignon, though trad Gallic dishes do pop up on the modern European menu from time to time. Instead expect dishes rife with seasonal produce that might include lobster & oak-smoked salmon mousse with pea shoots & orange chutney or halibut with purple-sprouting broccoli & carrots, plus chateaubriand for meat lovers. Wash it all down with predominantly French wines from a reasonably priced list.
