Frederick’s has lent refinement to pretty Camden Passage for more than four decades. It’s a large restaurant, the main dining area housed in a light-filled conservatory with a vaulted glass roof. Prices match the civilised surroundings, but a good-value pre-theatre menu (£19 for three courses, & available all evening Monday & Tuesday) allows a decent exploration of the French-accented cooking – perhaps starting with asparagus velouté with poached duck egg. Main courses include classics old & new: char-grilled lamb cutlets with mint hollandaise, say, or miso black cod with sweet-potato mash. Reports are mixed, with complaints that staff can be slow on the uptake, but fans praise the ‘to die for’ fillet of beef & ‘amazing’ chocolate soufflé. Service is generally knowledgeable – just as well, considering the vast wine list with an entire section dedicated to carefully chosen house wines. Boasts a great garden come summer.
