Regardless of cramped tables, Franco’s loyal, local following ensure it’s constantly abuzz. Proceedings start early with proper British breakfasts covering the whole works, while lunch brings four courses for £30 from a list that might take in squid salad with tapenade, pasta with mint, ricotta & courgettes, or pork chop with roast potatoes. Otherwise, expense-account types & refugees from the Davidoff shop opposite will find much to please on the carte, where peerless veal fillet with aubergines & asparagus or an unadorned chicken palliard are pitched at fatter wallets. With a benchmark tiramisu or a punishingly generous meringue with strawberries & ice cream to finish, the whole four courses might seem indulgent. If it’s sunny, eat outside with a bottle plucked from the extensive list of rosés.
Franco’s made it to the
shortlist entirely on the strength of a fine Italian selection. There is an ‘International Wines’ section (including such makeweight countries as France!) and a truly impressive spread of 24 rosés,
but this list is really all about Italy, particularly given that there are 14 vintages of Sassicaia and Tignanello.
