At first glance it may look like your average belt-&-braces boozer, with its unadorned pubby layout & wood-heavy interior, but the Fox has been elevated to a fully fledged ‘dining destination’ thanks to ‘excellent & reasonable’, gussied-up modern fare such as a salad of confit duck with blackcurrants & shallots, wild rabbit croquettes with sauce gribiche or whole roast bream with parsley & walnut dressing. The first-floor restaurant has a suitably lived-in vibe, & there’s a delightfully cosy private dining room on the top floor. The wine list is relatively short, but features a good cross-section of styles, supported by useful tasting notes: keep an eye out for themed wine dinners, such as the Argentinian evening with serious drinking from top Mendoza producer Catena. First-class service is a further plus.
