Square Meal Review of Fish! ?

Given the location, it’s no surprise that this family-friendly seafood restaurant is often overwhelmed by the relentless Borough Market crowds. Outdoor terrace seats are the clear favourites, although the glass structure means you never feel too far from the action. A menu of sustainable seafood includes home-smoked salmon, Bigbury Bay oysters from Devon & a perpetually popular fish pie. You can also choose your own species, which is grilled or steamed to order & served with sauces of your own picking (spicy salsa or a red-wine fish gravy, say). One doesn’t often think of going to a seafood restaurant for breakfast, but Fish! does early repasts on market days (Thurs-Sat) & brunch on Sunday, featuring grilled Scottish kippers & the heart-stopping (deep-fried) Monte Cristo sandwich.

I had brunch here with friends several weeks ago and was disappointed. I ordered scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and found the food very basic and not very well presented, although the smoked salmon itself was succulent and delicious. And the service was almost non-existent. I asked for a second cup of coffee halfway through my meal and only received at at the very end! That was despite all reasonable efforts to get the attention of the staff. I wouldn't rush back here anytime soon.

If you like your food still running around the plate, then this is a good place to choose. Generally, poor portion sizes, especially on the cod, with equally poor presentation. There is an over-reliance on padding out the main dish with the poor sides included. Prices are a little high given the portion size. Atmosphere is nice and church bells add a nice touch. But at 35.00 each, really quite disappointing.

Having read fellow reviewers feedback, I'd like to report that the service (at least on my visit) has improved though is slow at times, due to the sheer number of covers. The restaurant would do well to take away a few tables to ease the kitchen pace and make it a more comfortable dining experience as you do feel a bit like packed sardines(!)

The rainy Saturday we visited Fish! the warmth of the restaurant, coming from the open kitchen was a welcome comfort with the options on the menu providing ample choice. I particularly like the construct your own dish approach by choosing your fish, sauce and side. Prices are a little steep for the amount of fish you get on the plate but i suppose that is because they are ‘freshly caught’. Having said that, the fish was cooked well, was succulent on the inside and matched with flavoursome sides. The wine variety is ample and interesting to see champagne on the menu too, though further choices of wines by the glass are necessary.

An interesting concept though unfortunately for the restaurant, not in anyway unique.

We attempted to eat at this restaurant last Friday. I came with my two month old baby in a very narrow buggy. We asked for a table and the stoney-faced waitress in the reception made us feel extremely unwelcome when she pointed out at ´how much space our buggy would take´. I can totally accept that a restaurant may not have an available table for a buggy, but I don´t expect to be treated with such a lack of respect. Worse than that, when faced by this attitude, my friend insisted on leaving the restaurant, the waitress in the reception had no problems in showing she could not care less… and when we pointed out that we were going to post a review about their restaurant, she confronted us by saying that ´we could do this and complain to the manager if we wished´and insisted on us taking two restaurant cards for this purpose.

No matter the food, the service in this restaurant makes you loose your appetite.
