Fish!, which occupies a conservatory-style structure in the shadow of Southwark Cathedral, used to be packed on Fridays & Saturdays with shoppers from Borough Market. It’s a bit easier now to get a table, reflecting both the increased choice in the area & the declining standards in service & cooking at the restaurant. The proposition is simple: a selection of fresh fish, either steamed or grilled, served with the sauce of your choice. A handful of alternatives including fishcakes or a tuna burger share at least one characteristic with the other fish dishes forming the menu’s core: small portions for the price. This might matter less if the staff were as friendly & efficient as they used to be, but many readers now complain of inattentive, slow service.
