A new chef at this Portobello institution means not just a fresh menu & slick of peacock-green paint but a new clientele, too. A smart, educated-looking crowd now populates the bohemian, high-ceilinged dining room, atmospherically decorated with dried-flower arrangements, gauzy fabrics & illuminated by a striking crystal chandelier. The menu pairs strong flavours with considerable success, so that delicately pan-fried quail is accompanied by a potent spoonful of Madeira jelly, frothy cauliflower puree & morel mushrooms, while Cornish cod, salty & flaking, is delivered on a bed of peas & bacon with a creamy purée of vanilla & parsnip, accented by lobster butter: satisfying & well-presented stuff. Spotted dick with custard makes a hearty finish. It’s not just the food that is better, either: the staff have also upped their game, with service much improved.
