Square Meal review of Esca:
The concrete brutalism of the Chartered Accountants’ Hall is poor preparation for this spacious basement restaurant & bar, a tasteful & bright modern dining room with comfortable club chairs & a seasonal menu. Lunch might start with parfait of chicken liver & foie gras with elderflower jelly & brioche crisp before progressing to new season Cornish lamb rump with bunched baby carrots, Thai asparagus & Jersey Royal foam, or perhaps a roast endive & walnut tart with sauteed blue cheese gnocchi & parmesan tuille: this is one City dining room where the veggie selections are just as interesting as the meaty offerings. The wine list’s nobler French bottles will please those on expenses, while those paying their own bills will appreciate the more informal atmosphere & simpler food in the balcony wine bar area.
