El Vino is the stuff of legend. The place has been plying pinstripes with claret & Burgundy since 1879 & this branch, one of its four remaining City wine bars, became unofficial office to the cirrhosis-chasing hacks of Fleet Street, trading insider tips on front-page sensations such as the Profumo Affair over several bottles of France’s finest. The atmospheric mirrored room is a joy to cherish, a sepia-tint relic that oozes nostalgic charm. Soak up a Sancerre or venture south for a Carlos Serres Rioja Crianza, available by the glass or bottle, to partner an evening tapas menu, off which three selections are a reasonable £10.
