Square Meal review of Durrants: ? Write your review

Excusing the absence of a ruddy-cheeked major snoozing in one of the comfy leather armchairs, heavily patterned carpets, dark-wood panels & mature waiters in dickie bows give Durrants the air of a dusty old gentleman’s club circa 1970 rather than a restaurant in fashionable Marylebone. Which all means that the fresh, contemporary cooking comes as something of a surprise: green pea veloute with truffle-scented spring vegetables or diver-caught scallops with samphire, followed perhaps by honey-glazed duck breast with braised endive. But it’s the set-price lunch, offering simpler takes on regional British ingredients – Gloucester Old Spot pork chop, strawberries & clotted cream – which, at £15.95 for three courses, catches the eye.

Durrants has been refurbished around September 2008 and is no longer the fusty experience described in the Squaremeal review. It has an attractive, subtly modernised interior which is not out of place with its old world charm. Guests are always pleasantly surprised by its fashionable interior mixed with oak panelling and clubby booths, ideally for four diners seeking discretion. Service is also old-world and courteous helped by the fact that it is never that busy at lunch.
Food is well-executed and a mixture of modern continental and hearty British staples. All good, but not inspiring, and a touch on the expensive side.
Overall I recommend the experience as a little-known bolt-hole in Marylebone which impresses diners with its old world elegance, fashionable touches and upmarket ambiance. My particular tip is the small wood-panelled bar which is an excellent place for a quiet drink, particularly on a winter evening.
