Restaurant
For 200 years, these historic premises on a discreet City courtyard belonged to Sandemans (of fortified wine fame) & the name still pays tribute to the company’s iconic logo. The Don is adored by Square Meal readers – a ‘firm favourite with me & my foodie clients’, admits one supporter. Unerringly reliable European cooking & ‘top service’ are its biggest attributes, although oodles of charm lift the place well above routine business rendezvous – especially if you opt for the ground-floor restaurant with its soaring wine tower & colourful John Hoyland abstracts. Start with foie gras crème brûlée, before duck breast with crispy cabbage & an orange-tinged butternut squash purée, or seared sea bass fillets on a leek & bacon fondue. To finish, the raspberry brûlée is reckoned to be ‘close to sex’ (!). If you are looking for something simpler, try the bistro in the old brick-vaulted bottling rooms. The auspicious wine list runs to more than 350 bins plus 80 ports & 15 sherries.
