Square Meal review of The Don:

Once again the chorus of praise for this suave & assured occupant of the former Sandeman Port building is near unanimous, for visitors to both the tall, stately ground-floor restaurant & vaulted brick cellar bistro find much to commend in food, wine & service. The menu is comfortably European without being formulaic, so that in the dining room you might start with a classic Mediterranean fish soup with croutons, rouille & Gruyere cheese, or perhaps ravioli of organic goats’ cheese with roast chicory & fig & a port dressing, before progressing to seared sea bass with sherried aubergines & potato galette, or sauteed pig’s trotter with braised pig’s cheek & belly pork with a morel sauce. The approach in the bistro is essentially the same, but somewhat simpler, & desserts tend towards rich & luxurious comfort eating. The wine list includes the anticipated grand French reds & whites but also a selection from the restaurant’s own vineyard in the Hawkes Bay area of New Zealand.
