Square Meal Review of Le Deuxieme ?

Related to The Forge on Garrick Street, this smooth-running European brasserie goes about its business conveniently close to Covent Garden tube. The bijou dining room is smart & unfussy, with reassuringly efficient service that soon puts everyone at ease, while the straightforward menu offers plenty of choice beyond the French dishes that the restaurant’s name might lead you to expect. Start with a punchily fresh tomato tartare & asparagus or crispy pork, watercress & prawn salad with plum sauce, followed by generous grilled halibut with hollandaise or tender ostrich fillet with mushroom duxelle & an unctuous port reduction. Classic desserts such as chocolate fondant are up to scratch, & the French-biased wine list offers a decent choice by the glass & half-bottle. Also note the set menu (£14.50/16.50 for two/three courses).

Where to start? I love Paris! (Stay with me…) But, in Paris there is certain a type of touristy would-like-to-be haute cuisine restaurant, which is rather awful, quite expensive and utterly unsatisfying. The reason for this, I belive, is that they do not count on repeat business. Simply get people through the door and through their hour-and-a-half resembling a meal and out a juicy swipe of the credit card later. Le Duexième, unfortunately, has turned into a London rendering of such a place. Covent Garden, of course is historically tricky terrain, so I had often wanted eat here, but most often found myself opting for the more established competiors. So even bigger the disappointment, in a dining room that in itself has no reason to fail so dramatically. First was the House Champagne. This might be well used to clean the photocopier at the office – I did not know that such acidity was legal. The only thing that half-saved the miserable effort were two decent fish mains. The “classic” Covent Garden have become these mainly through tireless attention to detail and, of course, consistency. I don't know why the newer restaurants don't see this.

From the moment my friend I walked into this restaurant I knew were going to have a good time. The set menu is fabulous with enough to choose from. My friend is vegetarian and there was more than enough choice for her. This is a lovely little restaurant. The food is excellent.

We went to Le Deuxieme last night for the 3 courses & a Kir Royale for £25 and were really pleased with the restaurant. Usually set menus have very limited choice and everything I actually want to eat is on the a la carte, but the set menu at La 2ieme had 7 or 8 options for starters and mains and seemed to be the same as the a la carte.

We both had the tomato tartare with asparagus for starters, which was lovely and light and fresh – very summery. I then had the wild trout with crushed new potatoes for main course and my friend had the duck confit – both were excellent. My lemon tarte dessert was light and fresh – really well cooked. Overall, we were really happy with the quality and presentation of the food. The staff were really helpful and friendly and the atmosphere was buzzy and relaxed – a really good find in Covent Garden.

My only comment is that the restaurant itself looks a little scruffy on closer inspection – the walls are marked from the chairs rubbing off them and a lick of paint would really spruce the place up.

Went for lunch there in early May 2009.
The restaurant is tiny, and the decor leaves much to be desired – stained walls, dusty chairs, chipped flower vases on tables. However, the service was very quick and nice, and the orders were taken promptly.

The food was absolutely lovely. Warm goat cheese with walnut sause was exquisite, and beetroot marinated salmon on blinis was wonderful. Rib eye steak was perfectly done and very succulent, and leg of duck was also delicious.

Will definitely go again for an informal meal, as this place is lovely, particularly if you don't care too much about decor of the room.
