Square Meal Review of Le Deuxieme ?

Related to The Forge on Garrick Street, this smooth-running European brasserie goes about its business conveniently close to Covent Garden tube. The bijou dining room is smart & unfussy, with reassuringly efficient service that soon puts everyone at ease, while the straightforward menu offers plenty of choice beyond the French dishes that the restaurant’s name might lead you to expect. Start with a punchily fresh tomato tartare & asparagus or crispy pork, watercress & prawn salad with plum sauce, followed by generous grilled halibut with hollandaise or tender ostrich fillet with mushroom duxelle & an unctuous port reduction. Classic desserts such as chocolate fondant are up to scratch, & the French-biased wine list offers a decent choice by the glass & half-bottle. Also note the set menu (£14.50/16.50 for two/three courses).

London Grump :: Le Deuxieme, Covent Garden

A strangely calm European brasserie in the middle of Covent Garden, Le Deuxieme is one of the smarter restaurants in the area. A sort of pushing the boat out type of place, you know. For special occasions. And pay days. And theatre trips. The dining room is understated. Bijou. White. Not all white everything, but mostly. Each table has a tiny plant too, so you know that this is a fancy kind of place. No one is under any illusions. Plants = fancy...

  2. Covent Garden isn’t normally the first destination that comes to mind when thinking of a quiet evening meal thanks to its long association as being one of the biggest tourist draws in London. However, on a recent Saturday night, I found Le Deuxième to be a surprisingly tranquil and relaxing place to dine. Of course, this probably doesn’t apply to the pre-theatre crowd for the early seatings, but for a post 7.30pm meal, you’ll find Le Deuxième is an appealing venue that makes you forget you are even in such a tourist hotspot. The restaurant serves European fare and has been a popular pre-theatre place to eat since opening in 2001. A group of girl friends and I recently visited Le Deuxième for one of our party’s belated birthday celebrations. Arriving at 7.30pm, we were shown to a cosy table by the window looking out over Long Acre. Immediately upon arrival, we all commented how quiet – audibly rather than lack of customers – it was given its location on the bustling street. Low lighting, pristine white tablecloths and candles made for an enticing and more upmarket feel than I was admittedly expecting...
