Detroit’s name alludes less to the actual city in Michigan than to its famous musical export, Motown – the sort of sound that informs the funky R&B soundtrack at this glowing subterranean burrow. A throwback to when Covent Garden wore the nightlife crown (since assumed by Shoreditch), Detroit’s happy hour features a Frozen Mojito at the distinctly retro price of two for £7. Other options such as Cherry Aid (absinthe, cherry vodka, sloe gin, cherry syrup & lemon juice charged with Champagne) are not to be sniffed at, while nine of around 30 wines, from a prosaic Chilean Chardonnay (£13.50) to a starry Vessigaud Pouilly Fuisse (£40), appear by the glass. Beers include Estonian Viru & Peroni Double Malt.
