‘A typical old-school Davy’s’, observes one reader, referring to the sawdust-strewn floors & tankards of Old Wallop being supped by a brigade of loyal regulars. Concealed down a side alley by St Paul’s, this subterranean venue provides a welcome respite from the tourist scrum on Ludgate Hill, & there’s a deliciously Dickensian grit about the place with its clutter of pots, pans, shovels & rifles mounted on the walls. As an alternative to dependable Old Wallop, try a pint of 1870 lager or something from the ‘decently priced’ Davy’s wine list, which has a good showing of New World bottles. The menu tips its hat to current trends (mushroom & feta filo parcels with rocket), although burgers & steaks provide more traditional satisfaction.
