A stalwart of Canary Wharf’s lunch circuit, this Dickensian warren of cellar-style rooms ‘never fails to impress whether for a quick lunch or more leisurely meal’. There’s sawdust on the floor, dusty wine bottles in the window & candlelight at all hours of the day – which all lends itself perfectly to the classic bill of fare. Alderton ham with potatoes & piccalilli vies with Devonshire dressed crab on the grill room menu, followed up by treacle tart, strawberries & cream or a plate of Brie de Meaux. The mainly French wine list is excellent thanks to Davy’s alter ego as a wine merchant, with a good range of price points that stretches to £45 for a bottle of Chateau Cantemerle 1999. ‘Friendly service’ illicits universal praise.
