With its quiet peach pastel dining room & paintings of cricket matches on the wall, The Crescent seems quintessentially English. But it’s actually owned by Japan Airlines (as is the adjoining hotel) & is a good place to try an authentic Japanese breakfast of grilled salmon & miso soup. Lunch & dinner reverts to more familiar territory with a menu featuring warm crab tart with asparagus & pan-fried calf’s liver with creamed potato, which is a good deal at £21 for two courses. Less impressive is the slightly musty smell of the sleepy dining room & the tired gold carpets, though service that’s acclaimed as ‘exceptional’ compensates.
