The casks looming over drinkers in this Davy’s wine bar are an obvious pointer to its name; ‘cooperage’ was the term for a traditional barrel-maker’s workshop, & the folksy theme is reinforced by woodworking tools, remnants of the old trade & sawdust-strewn floors. ‘House ales & fine foreign wines’ are its stock in trade, with Davy’s Old Wallop served in pewter tankards alongside a frequently changing guest beer – although Japanese Asahi & crisp Thatcher’s Gold cider are on hand for other tastes & palates. Affordably priced wines by the glass are one of Davy’s trademarks, & the Cooperage is no exception; there’s also a choice of malt whiskies for generating inner warmth on cold evenings. Sausage & mash, steak sandwiches & other meaty delights are pleasant ways to fill the belly.
