A veteran from times when Japanese restaurants were spread thinly in the capital, Miyama has garnered loyal devotees over the years for its technically accomplished, ultra-traditional cooking. The teppanyaki bar upstairs is the hub of the operation, with weary suits finding consolation in soups, sushi & grilled dishes ushered promptly from across the hotplate. Others proceed down a flight of stairs into a cluster of plainly decorated rooms to be greeted by faultlessly polite, kimono-clad waitresses. Here, you can take your time, moving gently from mozuku (seaweed in a vinegar dressing) towards house special teriyaki & other centrepieces – there’s also a stash of bento boxes if you can’t decide what to choose. Arrive before 7.30pm for ‘happy-hour’ sushi, with items starting at just £1.
