Done out like Queen Victoria’s gillie’s cellar, this candlelit, sawdust-strewn basement is not the place to bring a high maintenance date. Not that The Chopper Lump’s regulars – the kind of folk who aspire to living the green wellie lifestyle – would have it any other way. Davy’s familiar foodstuffs – liver & bacon, creamy risotto, rib-eye & comforting puds – are spot-on. As is a smart wine selection that delivers good value: Léon Vattan Sancerre, New Zealand Waipara West Sauvignon Blanc, & a 2004 Jean-Noël Gagnard Chassagne-Montrachet Cuvée L’Estimée are all well under £30. Davy’s own-label cépages are equally on the money, making the Chopper popular with the gals from nearby Tatler & Vogue magazines.
