Square Meal Review of Chez Gerard Belvedere Road ?

One of the more upmarket dining options around London’s Southbank, this branch of Chez Gerard is rather handy if you’re catching a show, be it at the Royal Festival Hall, the National Theatre, or the BFI IMAX. Alternatively, its sophisticated Parisian interiors – all monochrome floor tiles & leather upholstery – should add a romantic flourish to a walk along the riverside. Readers have been impressed with the ‘attentive service & lovely atmosphere’, not to mention the cooking. You might sample the likes of a whole baked Camembert, served with crusty baguette for dipping, or classic steak tartare made from hand-chopped fillet steak, well-seasoned & topped with a free-range egg yolk. Finally, an ‘amazing’ crème brûlée, infused with Gâtinais honey before being rendered with a trademark burnt-sugar crust, should bring the meal to its sweet finale.

I went here on my Honeymoon this week, before going on the river cruise & the London eye. We were very impressed with the attentive service & the lovely atmosphere. This restaurant is both sophisticated & romantic. The service was quick & the food delicious! I reccomnd the creme Brulee, amazing!

I wish I had read “Robert”'s review here at Square Meal before I went to Chez Gerard Belvedere Street. I had the same experience. This used to be a reliable place for a quick good meal before a film or a concert at the South Bank. We waited 40 minutes for our main course and 20 for the dessert, which we had to abandon (but still pay for, of course) in order to make our show. The food remains dependable, and the service was friendly but… soooo soooo slow. And they just didn't seem to be get the message we were in a hurry. We had a booking for 7.15, and arrived a bit early to be told the table was being made up. We could see there were lots of free tables in the restaurant, so what was that all about? We finally got to the table about 7.25, and it was slow from then on. I don't like having to ask for the prix fixe menu, either. I would say like to say we'd go again, but only if we weren't going to see something at the Southbank… but why else would anyone make their way out here?

    What a dissapointment.
Took almost 40 minutes for the first course which required no cooking and should have been ready to serve when we arrived. When you are going to a concert and eating early you expect better service than this.
Service reluctant and after complaining three times too much apologising rather than serving the food. Main course very average when we eventually got it.
We had allowed an hour and a half for the meal. No time to try deserts.
This place used to be good,
We will not go back again.
