Square Meal review of Chez Bruce: ? Write your review

The closely spaced tables & noise levels are more brasserie than hushed temple to gastronomy, but this hubbub-filled dining room is still the finest in south London. With a reliance on top-quality, often forgotten ingredients, Bruce Poole consistently hits the highest notes with his gutsy, Anglo/French expressions of classically based cooking. A melange of chicken wings, duck hearts, wild mushrooms & snails showed off an earthiness not often seen in today’s superchef kitchens. In contrast, an offering of pasta with red mullet, clams & octopus exhibited simple elegance. Excellent fish mains (roast cod with olive oil mash & gremolata is a particular favourite), offal-based dishes & veg offerings could all be judged specialities. For those on a meat mission, the cote de boeuf (for two), served French style with béarnaise sauce & chips, is an absolute treat. Puds are superb & the cheeseboard is an education. The staff are consummate pros who see to your every need without being intrusive.

Wine List: Wine lovers should arrive early to study the 43 pages of this quite brilliant list. Each bin is one of the best of its type & reasonable mark ups make for huge choice under £30. Stunning older bargains can also be had thanks to a group policy of cellaring fine wine. Burgundy is a strength but the affable sommelier team might lead you towards Greece or Canada. Best Buy White 2005 Loureiro, Quinta do Ameal, Ponte De Lima, Portugal, £24. Best Buy Red 2001 Cotes du Rhone, Domaine Charvin, France, £30.

Chef: Bruce Poole

Chez Bruce’s Chef - Chez Bruce chef Bruce Poole

A late starter behind the stove – he had been working front of house when, aged 25, he realised his heart lay in the kitchen – Bruce Poole has created, in Chez Bruce, the blueprint for the perfect neighbourhood restaurant. After honing his skills under Philip Howard & Simon Hopkinson, Poole set up Chez Bruce on the former site of Harvey’s in Wandsworth in 1995 alongside business partner Nigel Platts-Martin. The restaurant gained a Michelin star in 1999 for its gutsy French cooking, the same year in which Poole helped set up Glasshouse in Kew, following this expansion two years later with La Trompette in Chiswick, both alongside Platts-Martin. Classically based in his cooking, Poole’s earthy dishes have more in common with revered food writers like Elizabeth David, Jane Grigson & Richard Olney rather than any fashionable culinary trends.

WE LOVE THIS PLACE!

PErfect for all occasions – dates, anniversaries, boisterous family meals, private groups… This place really is the pride of South London.
The staff are all so friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgable and make the experience all the better. The atmosphere is relaxed and uncomplicated. The sommelier is a genius and the food is awesome.

Creamed morel taglietelle, foie gras parfait, fried duck egg, navarin of lamb and roast veal are all heartily recommended whilst the cote de boeuf and cod and olive oil mash recommend theirselves. The puds look spectacular but I'v never managed to resist the cheese board – a real experience!

We were once dining with family and were offered complimentary dessert wines to match our picks 'to make up for the delay in receiving our main course' – we hadn't even noticed! Bruce Poole then came out to check we were OK.

I feel guilty if I don't visit at least every other month although the recent price increase has made it more luxury. At Sunday lunchtime's however, its still an absolute bargain!
