Champor Champor peddles creative modern Malaysian cooking against a backdrop of incense-scented romance, with a quirky mix of textiles, sculptures & carvings adding exotic allure & personality to the space. Pineapple & lime chutney granita is one of several ‘inter-courses’ available to cleanse the palate between starters & mains, which might include smoked salmon & kaffir lime leaf won tons followed by roast pigeon breast marinated with dried longan & hibiscus flower. Ambition runs high here, with few Malaysian classics left unmarked by the fusion brush. Ironically, the tasting menu seems rather more conservative than the carte, with beef rendang & vegetable lodeh (soup) among the offerings. Pairing such an inventive style of food with wine is not easy, but the small list manages to be both interesting & sympathetically priced.
