Square Meal Review of Cellar Gascon ?

Much more than a watering hole for foodie heavyweight Club Gascon next door, this charmingly oddball wine bar joins its auspicious sibling in singing the praises of Gascony, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. Topsy-turvy flowerpots hint at the foibles on the menu (one zany set of nibbles is titled ‘let them eat crisps’), but if you’re feeling hungry, grazing plates can provide a tantalising glimpse of the culinary magic that goes on next door – how about beef carpaccio with blackcurrant & violet mustard? Gascony’s signature foie gras is never far away, either – try it roasted with diabolo sauce. Otherwise, the express lunch menu offers good value for a dish of the day plus coffee & a glass from the exemplary stash of wines; bottles from south-west France claim pole position.
