Square Meal review of Cactus Blue: ? Write your review

A relatively inexpensive & easy-going slice of Tex-Mex hospitality, Cactus Blue makes a refreshing change from Chelsea’s usual upmarket cocktail haunts. It’s a capacious venue on three floors. There’s a DJ bar at street level, with a glass rooftop that opens up to the elements on warm summer nights. The top floor offers a more intimate drinking space, while in between is the mezzanine Mexican restaurant (open Thursdays to Saturdays). The cocktail list is rather short on excitement, although the extensive selection of Tequilas should please aficionados of the agave-based spirit; drink it by the shot or in a tray of six (for groups or hardcore hitters). The bar food is built around a standard Tex-Mex tapas menu offering the likes of mini nachos & firecracker buffalo chicken wings for a very reasonable £4 a pop.

This bar / restaurant is not very nice. While this area of the Fulham Road would need a good cocktail bar, Cactus Blue fills this void with the least possible gastronomic panache. The Mexican “Tapas” are best avoided as are complicated cocktails. Pity for a location with so much potential.

Very good atmosphere and great service.

BUT drinks VERY weak. Long Island Iced Tea had no flavour and the sangria tasted like fruit juice, not like red wine with fruit!!

Chicken fajitas had 5 strips of chicken. (We ordered 2 portions, so it was not a fluke.) And VERY over-priced for the quantity of food.

Go for drinks (like beer and straight bourbon & tequila only). BUT find another place to eat afterwards!
