A 25-year-old veteran of the restaurant London scene, Browns remains as safe & solid as the day it opened. Unfussy European dishes & classic Brit favourites form the backbone of the large all-day menu, served in convivial, brasserie-style surroundings. Start things off with ham hock terrine & piccalilli or half a dozen oysters, then move on to chicken pappardelle or steak-frites, before concluding with apple pie & custard or Pimms jelly with strawberry coulis. The all-day remit embraces reasonably priced breakfasts & afternoon tea, as well as a dependable, if unexciting, pre-theatre menu – although lunch remains the liveliest time in most outlets. With an accessible wine list & reasonably priced aperitifs (Campari & orange, Pimm’s Royale), as well as good-humoured staff, it’s small wonder that Browns continues to woo the crowds.

My wife and I went for breakfast and ordered two lattes, a traditional breakfast and Eggs Benedict. The lattes had to go back as they were luke warm. On their return they were hot with an after taste that made them undrinkable. The Eggs Benedict was undercooked to say the least. The eggs were hardly cooked. The traditional breakfast was average. Notified staf about the after taste in the lattes and weren't charged for them but felt too irritated to complain about the eggs. Paid and left and within an hour had a stomach pain that has two days to get over. Notified Browns via their website and haven't had any reply. Never again because if you can't get a relatively simple meal and two coffees correct, why bother. Ruined my day!
