Forever associated with the international Taj chain, opulent Bombay Brasserie still carries the air of a rather exclusive hotel restaurant, complete with thick carpets, lofty ceilings, imposing banquettes & portraits of Maharajahs through the ages. Gigantic chandeliers illuminate the vast, ballroom-like dining room while an army of waistcoated waiters attend to the tables. Cardamom features heavily as a flavour & ‘grand master chef’ Hemant Oberoi’s menu manages to embrace everything from lamb korma & ‘homemade chicken curry’ to marinated lamb shanks, Goan-style John Dory with piri-piri shrimps or chicken tikka dotted with brightly coloured shallots. There’s also a luxuriant, light-filled conservatory featuring a teppanyaki-style open kitchen devoted to seafood, as well as a semi-private dining area. Wine prices are not for the faint-hearted, with few bottles below £35.
