Square Meal Review of Bombay Bicycle Nightingale Lane ?

These days, the BBC – which like its broadcasting namesake has been through tough times – is better known for its Indian takeaway & delivery service. Nevertheless, there are still a couple of restaurants in the group & the long-established Balham branch looks set to continue successfully for the foreseeable future. Indian cooking in London has developed markedly over the years, & the wow factor once associated with this restaurant has somewhat diminished, but it’s still worth visiting for kebab murgh (a version of chicken tikka), tandoor-cooked king prawn arabi, Bombay mushrooms & the eye-watering murgh Mangalore: a chicken curry where strong cumin flavours just win out from behind the rich, chilli-laden sauce. Good breads (including buttery laccha paratha), a notable wine list & friendly service complete the picture.

The Bombay Bicycle Club used to be heads and shoulders above other south London delivery services – now it must be near the bottom of the pile. The menu has been shortened; the previous good quality ingredients have been changed for cheap alternatives (the prawns were once king prawns – now they are mean little shrimps that can hide under a few grains of rice; the large slices of fresh chicken have been replaced by regular bite sized cubes); and the final product is worse than mediocre. Surprisingly, the price is still the same. My last experience (Dec. 5th. 2008) was dire; tepid ordinary food; part of the order was not delivered; and an unhelpful response from the staff who were unable to offer a refund for the food that was not delivered (this has to be processed by their head office). In a word, dreadful.

This USED to be our favourite restaurant (Balham branch), however, back in August 08 it changed hands and has gone dramatically downhill. The staff who know us very well were so apologetic when we sent back both our starter and main course as they were overcooked and cold, to be replaced by more overcooked and cold dishes.

We are still in mourning for what used to be the best curry in the UK.

Absolutely absymal. The worst 'service' imaginable – just don't take the risk. After two hours of frustration, and at least 30 minutes spent on the phone with various staff members, we still had to eat elsewhere.

Dropped in to the the Fulham branch at 6.20pm and placed an order – chicken biryani, fish madras, pilao rice and garlic naan. We paid upfront and were assured that it would be delivered to our house within 50 minutes.
At 6.45 we received a phone call – the fish madras wasn't on offer, could we choose another selection? Decided on the fish masala, this wasn't on offer either – in fact, no fish dishes were! How about a chicken malabar? Nope. Finally, after establishing that only 3 out of the 7 chicken dishes on the menu were available, ordered the chicken jaisalmar and were told it would be with us in 15 minutes.
When dinner still hadn't arrived some 25 minutes later, we phoned again and were told that the order had been sent out but had been recalled when the kitchen realised it was missing its garlic naan.
Again, we were told it would be with us in 15 minutes. It arrived 20 minutes later – and after a tug-of-war with the delivery man, who was very reluctant to give us the order without our paying him, despite the receipt stating clearly that we'd paid in cash, we got our dinner!
Unfortunately, after all the delays with the forgotten garlic naan, the food was completely cold, AND the naan was still missing.
At this point, we lost it – dinner was 40 minutes late, cold, and STILL missing a £4 naan. We phoned to ask for our money back, and were subject to a range of accusations and abuse, first from the staff member who picked up the phone, then from the manager. After assuring them that we hadn't felt any need to eat food that was cold to the touch, we finally got an agreement to a refund, which they said would be dropped off within 10 minutes.
As we were coming to expect, this didn't happen – we had to phone them again, they flatly refused to issue the refund 'because once the cash payment was processed it was too difficult to refund', and said it was our fault (their words!) for taking the food without checking it was all there (clearly, not a mistake we'll make again). Got very cranky at this point and I will admit I yelled a bit, and finally after saying we were quite willing to come down and sort out the refund in person, they agreed to send it back with a delivery person.
Worth noting that we only received the refund after really making a fuss, that we had to do all the phoning (after the first call to tell us that they couldn't make our order, we did all the phoning to follow up when there kept being problems), and that we received absolutely no apologies whatsoever.
Sorry for the length of this – I have never been so let down by a restaurant/delivery service!

    Service is awful.
We ordered delivery at 5pm for a 630pm delivery. We had to call them at 700 to have them tell us that they got our order 10 minutes ago. They said it would take 45 minutes. Its was 845pm and we still had no answer, could not get through on any of their lines…

Very very bad service. I cannot recommend this to anyone.

    Perfect indian takeaway.

Menu offers the classics and just enough for the more adventurous. Sides and sundries the same.
Hyderadi lamb and chicken jaisalmer recommended. Online ordering system also a plus. Very consistent (use A LOT)!

Can't comment on the restaurant but the staff in the takeaway (Tooting) are prefect gents.

Definitely better than the average indian and good value for money.
