First-timers are sure to be seduced by the Blue Elephant’s ‘absolutely amazing tropical paradise’. Gaze at the babbling streams & koi carp, the luxuriant jungle greenery & ornamental bridges, & the secret alcoves dressed up to the oriental nines. Of course, the wow factor can diminish with time, & some regulars have noted a recent downturn in the cooking. At its best, the kitchen creates ‘exquisite’ renditions of the core Thai repertoire, such as an aromatic salad of crispy banana flowers & prawns, laab kai (minced chicken with lemongrass, lime leaves & fish sauce dressing) & roast duck curry, alongside some crossovers – seared foie gras with tamarind sauce, say. Prices might seem as excessive as the decor, although set menus (from £22) offer an acceptable snapshot of the cuisine. The Elephant’s zesty wines hold their own with the food: there are even some from Thailand. Service remains ‘effortless & sincere’.

Having recently dined at Blue Elephant after a gap of two years there is a definite change in the appeal and justification of high prices – unfortunately like the economic markets – this has occured in a downward curve. For me, the once much lauded Blue Elephant has lost not only its unique charm but also a certain aura it had on my first visit. It's a little like coming across your favourite handbag (the one you wouldn't be seen out without) after a few years of it hiding under your bed – only for you to look at it and see it no differently to all the others.

The good service remains effortless and sincere as always and one cannot fault BE on this count. However the price of dishes just does not correlate with the quality of food on the plate – which lacks the authenticity and freshness it once had. In addition, the lush tropical surroundings and the wow factor of the plentiful water features and koi carp now feel a little stayed and almost amusement park-ish.

Essentially it appears that BE is not a repeat customer venue other than for locals who see it as just that – their local. If your looking for a unique venue that will wow your guests but are not terribly fussed about the food then this is the venue to make that one stop at. However, if your looking for the same magical atmosphere again and again, with fresh dishes that you couldn't make out of your own kitchen with the help of their own brand ingredients -then perhaps its time for a change.

I had eaten at the restaurant in 2005 and remembered it to be quite good. Unfortunately, four years later the food was bland, the music loud and not appropriate for the restaurant, and the prices far too high for the mediocre meal. The service was solid and attentive.
