The granddaddy of the Thai restaurant scene remains a beacon for elegant food in ‘escape from reality’ surrounds. If the delicious but usual line-up of satay, curries, stir-fries & noodle dishes doesn’t appeal, then there’s a raft of innovative east-meets-west inventions to dig in to. Silky foie gras with tamarind sauce might be followed by rack of lamb with wild rice & fried basil, or more adventurous stir-fried crocodile with fresh peppercorns & palm hearts. The weekday set lunch is great value (£10/£15 for two/three courses), but it’s the Sunday buffet running until mid-afternoon that really pulls in the crowds. A finely honed, but pricey wine list includes choices by the glass & half-bottle as well as a clutch of sakes. But, while food, drink, decor & vibe invite nothing but praise, service is occasionally described as ‘rude.’
