Red Room
The jewel in the crown of the Bleeding Heart dynasty, this unstormed Bastille of French cooking has been wowing the denizens of Farringdon & beyond since the 80s – & it still knows how to
flatter & seduce almost everyone who passes through its doors. Half-hidden in a cobbled courtyard with a macabre history, the rabbit warren of subterranean dining rooms is beguilingly cosy,
quite smart & warm-toned, with the odd famous face for good measure. It makes a suitably discreet setting for an unapologetic masterclass in modernised bourgeois cuisine: open the bidding with
a terrine of foie gras with port jelly, spiced mango & homemade pistachio brioche ahead of sautéed calf’s liver with bacon, pommes purée & Madeira. To finish, consider ‘le grand macaroon au
citron’. High prices & occasionally clumsy service can irritate, but fans still think the place is ‘simply amazing’.
