Square Meal Review of Benihana ?

Food meets theatre in this branch of the global teppanyaki chain, where red-toqued chefs slice, dice, sizzle, ignite & possibly even juggle their way through crowd-pleasing renditions of Japanese standards. Traditional dinners all begin with miso soup, a ginger-dressed salad & hibachi prawns, flowing swiftly into a flaming display of fried rice & furious grilling – perhaps chicken breast or salmon at the affordable end of the menu, rising to Wagyu beef, lobster & a chateaubriand that will set you back the price of at least two West End shows. The menu is bulked out with a considerable selection of sushi & tempura, while those not after gastro-fuelled theatrics can settle for ‘Rocky’s power lunch’ – a sub-£10 selection of teriyaki bento boxes & grilled seafood salads. Captivating for kids, celebrants & gaggles of tourists.

Benihana is always good value for food, less so for drinks and service. There seems to be a complete dearth of Japanese waiters in the place now, and the atmosphere is no more than average. But the set teppanyaki meal is as good value as ever and you can get in and out in an hour, very well fed for £20 a head. Not bad for Central London!
