Looking picture-pretty in an attractive Mayfair mews, The Guinea is the sort of well-run hostelry where you might encounter Kenneth More, Margaret Lockwood & Terry Thomas dishing the latest Ealing Studios dirt over a sherry or five. This time-warp tavern may feel like 1955 revisited, but the food & drink for those not eating in the Grill is well up to today’s standards. Forget warm beer & curled-up paste sandwiches, this place dispenses well-kept Young’s ales & draught ciders, plus award-winning pies & welcome blasts from the past including a chicken siciliano grilled sandwich with coleslaw. Of course, time hasn’t really stood still at The Guinea: you’ll need around eight of those old coins(£8.70, in fact) for a glass of house fizz or Chablis.
