Described as an ‘old-style Marco Pierre White restaurant’, The Belvedere occupies a glorious location in the centre of Holland Park surrounded by flower gardens & lawns. Inside, it’s no less impressive, with high ceilings, large mirrors & wooden floors along which 30s-style drinks trolleys make their rounds. Despite the tourists, there’s something very fin de siècle about its atmosphere, & the food comes with lots of Gallic grace notes. It may not break the mould, but you can eat well from a menu that promises foie-gras parfait with pear chutney ahead of gigolette of venison with sauce Grand Veneur, linguine with clams or roast beef fillet with sautéed Jerusalem artichokes forestière, pommes mousseline & truffle jus. Service is formal & courteous ‘without being overly stuffy’, & Saturday lunch – complete with a tinkling pianist – is recommended.
