Square Meal review of Red Bar:
The recently refurbished Red Bar makes a dramatic design statement: its bold colour scheme is reminiscent of Heinz Cream of Tomato soup, with a dash of Minestrone courtesy of an abstract painting on its lovely lacquered walls. The only other feature is the irritating swoosh of traffic zapping down Park Lane, visible beyond plate-glass windows. Staff are uniformly polite & punters made up of that strange mix that big hotel bars inevitably attract: international tourists, touring rock groups & suburban couples attending functions. The reason the Red Bar doesn’t yet pull in the local good-time crew is its slightly-adrift-of-everything location. A shame, because the cocktails are professionally mixed, there’s a useful selection of Champagnes & Cognacs & the sofas are oh-so tempting.
