Snuggled into a basement just off Eastcheap, this ultra-traditional City wine bar (part of the Davy’s chain) comes with its full quota of Windsor chairs, tongue & groove woodwork & rustic trappings. It’s a cosy & snug spot if you fancy a pewter tankard of Old Wallop ale or a bottle from the Davy’s trademark wine list, which includes some very affordable own-label offerings. Sausages are to the fore on the short bar menu, with a choice of bangers & three kinds of mash, plus the usual assortment of hot & cold sandwiches, sharing platters & nibbles. Slightly more elaborate food is on offer in the rather formal dining room below the bar, with potted shrimps to start, Donald Russell steaks from the char-grill, & treacle tart to finish.
