Part of the Davy’s group, Bangers is an intriguing basement bolthole that finds favour with suited drinkers looking for liquid satisfaction – perhaps a pint of fruity Old Wallop, served in a pewter tankard should you desire. There’s a decent choice of spirits, too, but wine is really the way to go, with a 50-bin, whistle-stop tour around the major growing regions; Davy’s own-label selections, including a claret & a Spanish Tempranillo, are well worth a try. The food is another reason to visit, with a menu that runs from 21-day-aged Donald Russell beef & dressed Devon crab to bangers & mash (naturally). Visitors have a choice of Dickensian rooms, all covered in dark-wood panelling, & all with a traditional, rather masculine feel. Affable, on-the-ball staff get the thumbs-up from readers.
