Heavy velvet curtains shroud the entrance to this slick Eastern European rendezvous – as cool as its name might suggest. The dining room is positioned towards the back, with the moodily lit bar shielding it from the commotion of Blackfriars Road. Strong wooden beams evoke the building’s former incarnation as a coach house, while massive skylights, artwork & utilitarian furniture lend airy modernity to the space. Starters skate seamlessly from Hungarian chilled sour cherry soup to Siberian pelmeni (veal & pork dumplings), before mains chip in with pork schnitzel or poached shin of beef with horseradish sauce. Sadly, workaday Euro desserts such as chocolate mousse overshadow the likes of nalesniki (Polish crêpes folded with sweet cheese, nuts & raisins). Wines include a few esoteric, Eastern European numbers, while well-organised staff know how to win over the punters – there’s always a good vibe.
