Square Meal review of Balls Brothers St James's Street: Balls Brothers St James's Street review

If Tory grandee Ken Clarke were a bar he’d be Balls Brothers St James’s: old school, well-upholstered, clubbable, comfy & with a keen interest in wine & cigar-smoking – though the latter happens outdoors nowadays. It’s only fitting that a bar owned by wine merchants will focus on the best quality available across a range of price points. Rustic French reds, such as a Cotes de Saint-Mont from Gascony, start at under £15 while double that yields a Vina Real Gran Reserva 1994, a deeply rewarding Rioja from an engaging list that also runs to vintage bubbly & port. A cosy candlelit affair, this maze of alcoves & nooks is done out in regulation BB kit. Food includes fish pie, Cumberland sausages, luxury bloomer sandwiches & quails’ eggs for a sharply tailored clientele.
