This basement Balls Brothers is pretty much as you’d expect: scrubbed brick, dark wood tongue & groove panelling & good air conditioning. The atmosphere is relaxed & comfortable while the restaurant area is warmed up with framed prints & wine paraphernalia. This is the place to tuck into a crispy goats’ cheese parcel with leek & lime-scented sour cream before a main course of smoked haddock with colcannon, soft poached egg & white wine sauce. There are hot & cold sandwiches or salads at the bar & the wine list is international but with due deference to France; the clarets kick off at £16 for a 2004 Chateau Malbat AC & there’s a selection of rose that includes a 2005 Sancerre for summer drinking.
