Despite having outlived its famous flamingos, Babylon remains a perennially popular dining destination. The elegant decor of storm-grey tables & aubergine chairs inevitably takes a back seat to what’s outside the windows: one & a half acres of the Kensington Roof Gardens & a smashing south-facing view over London. The modern European cooking more than holds its own against the setting, though steep pricing matches the lofty location. A cloud-like mature Montgomery cheddar souffle or a risotto fritter of smoked bacon & globe artichokes might be followed by tender Gressingham duck breast with caramelised apple rings & roast parsnip, drizzled in meaty jus. Poached Champagne rhubarb trifle & peach Melba accompanied by candy floss sweeten the experience further, while barbecues in the gardens are a summer institution.
