Square Meal Review of 1901 at Andaz ?

‘The setting is king,’ says one reader, & it’s true that 1901’s main draw is its stunningly beautiful dining room – complete with a magnificent stained glass cupola & swish marble fixtures. Diners are often entertained with live music – a trumpeter might saunter round the eye-catching centrepiece bar – & the whole effect is quite engaging. The food is safe rather than spectacular (‘tiny portions & high prices’, grumbles one customer), but the kitchen deserves praise for its focus on regional provenance: Hertfordshire spinach mousse comes with a quail’s egg, beetroot carpaccio & truffle vinaigrette, while Suffolk venison appears with a cobnut crust, Granny Smith apple purée & creamed salsify. There are livelier places in this part of town, but few that offer such unabashed elegance – with the bonus of discreet, attentive service.

The room itself is very grand and there's a good atmosphere and it kind of works very well in a strange way. The service was fine although the waitress couldn't seem to understand why we wanted to chat before ordering and hence asked us every 30 seconds.
The food and drink is way over priced and very small portions. The chef tries to combien very unusual flavours and they just don't work.
No one should serve delicate fish with a kind of tomato relish and greasy cream sauce, the vegetables well deliberately well undercooked and cold with more grease.
I can't criticise totally as they experience was enjoyable but maybe that was the company. The Recommended Austrian wine was lovely and good value, the Billy Cart Salmon champagne was overpriced at £20 a glass.
The potential of this place is enormous but they need a new chef.

A stunningly beautiful room, the setting is the king here. Food was competently cooked (scallops, then beef), the ingredients clearly being of high quality. Staff were charming and efficient. Yes it is expensive but the opulent setting makes it feel well worth it.
I would certainly return, either with clients or for a quiet treat with friends.

I booked 1901 after reading Square Meal’s glowing review and couldn’t believe it had received a star. Although the staff were numerous and desperate to please, the service was haphazard and slow. The standard of food was average with tiny portions and high prices. My guests paid for the meal and I was left feeling embarrassed to have made the recommendation. Square Meal mentions ‘live music’. Not on this evening when we were subjected to soft orchestral piped music, with a horrible version of ‘Je t’aime’ coming through the speakers on arrival! My only positive comment would be that the room is beautiful with a magnificent stained glass ceiling from the hotel’s days as a grand railway hotel but the atmosphere is about as warm as a station waiting room.

Looking at earlier reviews I was a little unsure as to what to expect on my recent trip to 1901. I'd been to it's earlier incarnation a few years ago so had a rough idea of what to expect. I did however find it a big improvement and certainly a lot better than reviews earlier in the year indicated. Granted it is a very large room and I can understand atmosphere may be affected but for a relaxing but formal lunch it suited me perfectly. I loved the British menu and was great to see so much regional produce in use. I'd opted for a starter of Home cured breast, pickled Scottish girolles, roasted plum and bittercress – The Duck was some of the most delicious I've ever had and mixed very well with the taste of the plum. My main came courtesy of the special of the day which happened to be one of my favourites – Leg of Lamb – wonderfully succulent. Dessert was Baked Apple sponge, lemon-caramel sauce and custard – so delicious and finished the meal off perfectly.

Wines were suggested by the glass from the sommelier who did an excellent job and impressed me by genuinely choosing what he thought would suit rather than what would suit his sales – Something you don't always seem to be able to count on. I'd definitely go back probably for a dinner as I'm curious as to how the atmosphere changes for the evening but in the meantime there is so many other choices in the Hotel I better make plenty of excuses to head to Liverpool Street.

Great SM deal. Lovely room, food, service. Only minor quibble; they gave us a table in the bar area, without tablecloths rather than the restaurant area. Can only assume because we were on SM deal and not full price.

One of the more pathetic dining experiences I've had in London for some time…we were a party of 8 who arrived for a late-ish dinner at 8 PM. The dining room was half full, more with people having drinks, as the restaurant has a bar in its centre and dining tables around the edges. The acoustics of the vast dining room are poor – voices are amplified – and the management obviously does not think that mixing diners and drinkers is a problem. Despite the numerous staff running around, it took 15 minutes for one of them to come by to drop of f menus, another 15 to come back for the orders, and another 10 to come by to see if we wanted to order wine. The attitude was of the staff was appalling – snooty, distant, and quite uneager to please. Starters were OK. The mains were by and large cold (poached haddock with a saffron jus had potential, but tepid just doesn't bring out the flavour) and the portions were ridiculously small (we referred to the signature lamb dish as the “Children's Menu”, with two mini slices of meating fighting it out with a handful of chips in the vast plain of the dinner plate). All in all, this place is not deserving of any stars (a meteor entering the atmosphere would be a more appropriate metaphor) – the serving staff is obnoxious, the attention to the quality of the food served is non-existent, and the feeling around our table was a unanimous “never again”.

many reviews rave about this restaurant and there is no doubting it is fine dining, the service is pretty much impeccable and the ambience makes for a relaxing lunch. BUT, the rather limited menu is spoilt by the fact that it is overpriced and pretentious, Let me quote you some prices – scallops, yes you get TWO for a tenner, and langoustines, you get ONE for a tenner, as a starter, yes you get a slice of cured ham with it, it is an inch wide and 3 inches long and i am probably overstating it. It is very delicious, there is no denying that and teh service is as good as its hould be. My college had the misfortune to order canons of lamb, err two slices of meat about the size of a two pound coin, and for your pleasure it will cost you twenty pounds. Thank God for the excellent bread and the superb collection of British cheeses. Hey I maybe old fashioned but when I have paid £40 for a meal I like to have my hunger satisfied!
In short another pretentious, over the top restaurant where people go because of its reputation, not to get fed
