Square Meal review of 1901:
1901 has opened on the site formerly home to Aurora, the grand dame of what was once The Great Eastern Hotel. In keeping with new owner Andaz's boutique mindset, not only has the decor been revamped but there is a new ethos of informal luxury, shifting the focus from BlackBerry-toting power diners towards the Spitalfields art & fashion crowd. Gone are the silver service trappings & the encyclopaedic wine list & in their wake is something altogether funkier: menus using locally-sourced produce, a simplified pricing structure, a stronger focus on drink & much greater informality of service.
