After a 10-year stint behind the pans at Aubergine, main man William Drabble hung up his whites in autumn 2009 & moved on to open Seven Park Place in St James’s. His replacement, Christophe Renou, was Drabble’s one-time protégé & is keeping this blue-blooded Park Walk veteran right on course. Refined French cuisine with some contemporary accents has always been the kitchen’s hallmark – witness a starter of roasted scallops & ceps with beetroot vinaigrette or a main course of sea bass with braised lettuce, gnocchi & meat jus. There’s also an earthy undercurrent, in the shape of, say, saddle rabbit & leg with civet sauce, while desserts mix old & new, from Chartreuse-infused soufflé to black orchid (a cocktail served as a pudding). Prices are high (a minimum of £68 for three courses from the carte), but service is discreet & elegant to a fault.

I visit Aubergine regularly and I think their lunchtime menus are the best I have tried anywhere in London. The chef takes a lot of care and each course has always been absolutely delicious. The value for a 3 course meal, with wine included for £34 is, without question, very good value.

A previous reviewer made some comments about being asked to move on when he and some friends from a gallery opening were standing outside drinking champagne. I am surprised to hear that anyone from Aubergine was rude in the way he suggested. But I do wonder if, perhaps, the people concerned, having imbibed a glass or two of champagne, might just have been a little louder than they realised? In my experience, things do get a little out of hand sometimes when people are drinking together.

I was at a Gallery opening right next to Aubergine last night. Having owned a dozen restaurants myself and recently arrived from New Zealand I was excited to dine at the famous restaurant after the gallery opening. Whilst looking at the menu outside with a friend while holding a glass of champagne a completely rude waiter asked asked to get off the pavement. His manor was completely offensive and snobby. Little did he know that 8 of us intended to dine there. Such an impression is without question reflective of this once fine restaurants current standing. Please do not judge a restaurant on its previous heritage. Aubergine was also completely empty and in my opinion deserves to be so. We ended up at the pub on the corner and had excellent food and perfect service.
