Square Meal review of The Herne Tavern:
Further evidence of the gentrification of south-east London comes in the form of yet another gastropub moving in on old-boozer territory. While the pub bit of the operation hasn’t changed much – a crowd of older locals continue to congregate around the dark wood bar – the garden, in summer at least, is full of relaxed, young families, & the narrow room at the back has been reincarnated as a cosy dining room. Changes on the menu do not, however, entail much modernisation, with most options, from buttery potted shrimps & fish & chips to bangers & mash, residing in the comfort-food tradition. A perfectly cooked steak & burger beef up the program, which, with blackcurrant sorbet for dessert, can end with a nice balance of sweet & tart. The wine list, while lacking in excitement, is reasonably priced & staff are eager to please.
