With much of Belsize Park in the grip of chains, independently run Artigiano continues to ‘bristle with potential' – despite the odd quibble about 'exorbitant' prices. Its clean lines, gentle colours and impressive glass atrium might suggest a touch of Mayfair-esque glamour, but the kitchen is rooted in the familiar provincial world of tagliatelle with beef ragù and veal escalopes in lemon sauce, although there are a few brighter dishes such as lobster and scallop risotto or seared tuna with rocket and fennel salad. Finish with white-chocolate mousse with raspberry sorbet, green-apple sauce and Marasca cherry liqueur – or you might fancy a traditional ‘torta della nonna' with pistachio custard. Breakfast, a kids' menu and jazz nights every Friday (note: a cover charge of £7.50 applies) complete a sociable package.
