The backstreets of Barnes turn up some odd little places, but locals must be very pleased that this gastropub is one of them. If The Brown Dog were any easier to find, it would be even harder to get a table here in busy periods. Drinkers are welcome to prop up the bar in one room with a pint of well-kept local ale – Sambrook’s Wandle, for instance, or Twickenham’s Autumn Blaze – or a glass of wine from the decent list. Diners make their way to the other room for lovely seasonal soups & salads, top burgers & the likes of pan-fried skate with salsa verde, or confit duck’s leg with French beans & Victoria plums. On sunny weekends, when the garden comes into its own, the staff light the barbecue.
